A Monkey Theory of Fairness

This brief video, especially at 0:45, shows a monkey making a fairness calculation. It is universally recognizable, and I won’t ruin it by discussing it. But in broad overview, this monkey has to have a theory of mind in order to do what he does.

I am a psychiatrist (psychopharmacology and psychotherapy) specializing in the so-called "personality disorders," particularly narcissistic and borderline personality disorders. I was a Fellow and then an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia from 2004- 2011, when I had an intellectual crisis-of-faith in which I stopped believing that neuroimaging could shed significant insight into the mystery of subjective experience.
